WESLEY COLLEGE OLD BOYS UNION IN THE UNITED KINGDOM ....Our Story

Rev. Daniel Henry Pereira started Wesley College in 1874. Young Daniel Henry had a keen interest in teaching. The school at Dam Street formed the beginning of Wesley College, which was founded on the 2nd of March 1874. He was the first vice principal with Rev. Samuel Rowse Wilkin its first Principal (1874 - 1879).

One of the greatest of the many Principals was Rev Henry Highfield. At London and Cambridge Universities, he distinguished himself in Classics and English. In November 1905, the foundation stone was laid and the new building in Karlsrush Gardens was opened in 1907.

Amongst his pupils were Sir Oliver Goonatileke (Governor General), Sir Mohammed Marcan Marker (Senator) and Sir Gerard Wijeyekoon, the first President of the Senate. Another distinguished Wesley college old boy was Sir Don Baron Jayatillake. By his sheer intellectual ability and hardwork, he reached the top.

In 1946, Sir Claude Corea was Sri Lanka's first ambassador to the USA as well as being a Wesley old boy. In 1952 while Claude Corea served as Ceylonese representative in Britain, the Queen bestowed his knighthood.

Old Boys Union - United Kingdom

Wesley College OBU in the United Kingdom initiated in 1991.

Rev James Cartman and Rev David Izzett, two former Principals of Wesley College Colombo, were appointed as Patrons. Douglas Raymond was elected as the first President of the Wesley College OBU UK.

Twenty one years is a long time in the history of any organisation, and we can proudly say that the Wesley College OBU UK has funded the Alma mater in the field of Education, Sports, Buildings and the Library to the tune of over £40,000.

In the last two years The Wesley OBU UK has donated to:

M H Mohamed Sports Pavilion, Western Band Project, refurbishing the home of our ground man Raja and the Wesley College Swimming Pool Project, totalling £6000.

2013

Feed the Homeless - a charity project by Wesley College OBU (UK)

Wesley College Old Boys Union (UK), building on the success of year 2012, decided at our first meeting to initiate a Feed the Homeless project for the year 2013. The event was held on Sunday the 5th of May at St Pius, the 10th Catholic Church in Ladbrook Grove, London. Wesley College OBU (UK) members served 104 homeless people a hot Sunday roast, finished with afternoon tea.

Wesley College Walk of Grit (Charity Walk) By Wesley College OBU (UK)

The first Wesley Charity walk was held on Sunday the 9th of June 2013. The walk started with the past presidents Mr. Paul David and Mr. Azahim Mohamed cutting a double blue ribbon with the current committee. The walk proceeded, lead by the Wesley Flag bearer through the scenic nature trial at Aldenham Country Park which is 700 acres.

Wesley College Dinner Dance 2013

The annual Double Blue Dinner Dance will be held this year at the Holiday Inn Wembley, Empire Banqueting Suite , Empire Way, Wembley Middlesex HA9 8DS on Saturday the 5th of October 2013.

The other projects scheduled for 2013 are:

Alms giving is planned in November to remember all Past Principals, teachers and students. Our annual joint Carol Service with our sister school Methodist College OGA. It will take place on Sunday the 8th of December 2013, at Chelsea Methodist Church.

Recognition Awards

Another major initiative which was undertaken by the OBU in the recent years was to recognise the past members of the OBU (UK) for their contribution towards the success of the OBU.
