The events leading to the Cultural Revolution which Mao Zedong called the permanent revolution to weed out the "poisonous weeds" that crept into society since the revolution that established the Peoples Republic of China.

The author is the wife of retired Sri Lankan Diplomat, Chandra Monerawela, who was based in Peking during a momentous period 1965-68 in its history. During this turbulent time the author kept a diary of events and making friends with a cross section of Chinese people gathered material to write a historical novel.

The book has many outstanding reviews and a recent one from a former polish ambassador reads , "In her penetrating vision she stands out even among the Chinese authors, mostly women, from relatively recent plethora of personal experience but still short of the psychology that Rupa Monerawela is able to convey" Bogoslaw Zakrzewqski.

The outcome is a brilliant novel. It has many scenes of everyday life of the Chinese working class and feudal customs that even communism cannot destroy. The author has given a balanced view of Chairman Mao's achievements as well as the economic liberalisation advocated by President Lieu Shaoqui that was closer to the aspirations of all human beings. This historical period would be valuable information to the new generation of the Chinese young. The 'wisdom,' is to understand that their past culture is an integral part of their present and future culture.
